Orkney Skate Trust has developed a training programme aiming to teach interested anglers in the correct methods of tag and release fishing and saftey at sea whilst fishing.

Marine Biologist Dan Wise has teamed up with skate angling expert Davey Benson as well as experienced local MCA class 1 skipper Roy Anderson to teach the course.

The short course is over 1 or 2 days and includes:

• Biological and Ecological information on Flapper Skate
• Orkney Waters and Skate habitats
• Personel Protective Equipment (PPE) for skate fishing
• Correct angling equipment for Flapper Skate
• Fishing Techniques
• How to handle Flapper Skate
• How to insert the dart tag
• What information to record for the project
• Anchoring and mooring techniques

The training programme has received grant support from the Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership and is therefore free of charge to all anglers.
